Meet Our VOA Family

5 questions with Megan Smith:

Your work is challenging – what motivates you to keep doing this rewarding yet sometimes difficult work?
I love being able to help my residents age in place. I know when I get older, I hope I’m able to live independently for as long as possible. It can be quite challenging sometimes to work with a population that is older than me, but I learn something new every day and am also able to help provide resource for them to remain independent for as long as possible!

If you could tell a friend one reason that working for Volunteers of America is rewarding and worthwhile, what would it be?
I love working for VOA because I’m surrounded by coworkers that support and assist me in everything I do, as well as working closely with clients from different populations. I’m able to utilize my Masters in Social Work by making a difference in my clients’ lives each day, while also being able to do my job as a Property Manager.

Tell us about your favorite memory of a time you helped a client?
I think my favorite memories involve times where we were able to go above and beyond for our clients. When I started at VOA as Service Coordinator, I spent some of my own money to ensure that the residents were able to all receive Christmas presents. Watching our residents open gifts, play games, and enjoy a Christmas potluck is always a special time.

What is your favorite hobby?
My favorite hobby is watching/attending University of Louisville football and basketball games! Go Cards!

What is the best movie you’ve seen recently?
I watched the Home Alone movies not too long ago and they never get old – if it were up to me, it would be Christmas-time/winter year round!
