On July 9, Volunteers of America Mid-States celebrated a milestone at Freedom House, our women’s addiction recovery program for pregnant and parenting women: Babies 98, 99 and 100 were delivered healthy and drug-free on the same day! Never before in Freedom House’s 22-year history have three babies been born on the same day, with baby Myliah Rose (left) the 100th.
Our generous supporters and professional, dedicated staff provided significant support in helping us achieve our goal of adding capacity to this critical program. Because of this, we now serve more women, and, in turn, deliver many more healthy babies.
The story of Myliah Rose and her mother, Toshia, was featured by reporter Laura Ungar in the Courier-Journal on August 2nd. Of the story, Volunteers of America President and CEO Jennifer Hancock said, “Toshia’s experience of intergenerational addiction is heartbreaking, and yet her commitment to staying clean and sober and her courage to share her story has stayed with me. She and Myliah are great examples of why we do what we do.”
