Donor Spotlight: Greg Bourke & Michael De Leon
Greg Bourke and Michael De Leon were first introduced to Volunteers of America Mid-States in 2012 when they visited our office in downtown Louisville for the annual Catholics for Fairness Rally. After meeting some of our team members, Michael and Greg were invited to attend a Real3 Journey at Louisville Family Housing Services, where they saw the services offered to families staying with us and were drawn to the family-centered and comprehensive approach to the care we provide.
"The session included a tour and overview of the services provided, everything from a homework space and help for the children to financial management classes for parents. The fact that a family could stay together in this particular shelter really hit home," Michael said of the Journey. "We learned about Volunteers of America's approach to teaching life skills, getting people on their feet and subsequent follow through. We decided we would like to help."
Greg and Michael's daughter, Bella, began volunteering at Louisville Family Housing services, serving meals and providing playtime activities for the younger children. She has now been a dedicated volunteer for three years.
"The fact that Bella has chosen to return is an indicator of how she feels about Volunteers of America and the work they do. As parents it's been rewarding to watch her grow, volunteering alongside her and now that she has a driver's license she is able to go on her own," Michael shared.
Greg and Michael decided to take their commitment to Volunteers of America a step further in 2014 when they became members of our Positive Change Society and have hosted a table at our Power of 1 Breakfast the last two years.
"We are proud supporters of an organization that provides so much to our community," Michael said.
In December, Michael and Greg were named Persons of the Year by the National Catholic Reporter for their work advocating for marriage equality. They are also involved locally with the Fairness Campaign. Volunteers of America is grateful to our dedicated, enthusiastic supporters like the Bourke-De Leon family. Because of their commitment to our mission, we are able to create positive, impactful change in our communities.
