Touted as the first program of its kind in Louisville, Volunteers of America’s VOA Home provides individualized care and goal-setting with families facing homelessness.
The program provides safe, decent emergency shelter for families who become homeless due to a wide range of factors, including eviction, domestic violence, mental illness, substance abuse, unemployment or underemployment, lack of affordable housing, and lack of money management and/or life skills. Often times it is a complex mixture of these factors that lead to homelessness.
In an effort to address the immediate needs, VOA Home's Unity House provides food, housing, and safety. Once clients are stabilized, a case manager completes a customized comprehensive assessment of the family’s strengths and needs in the areas of housing, employment, education, physical and mental health, substance abuse, child-related issues, finances, and support services. This information is used to engage the family in planning for self-sufficiency.
Building on strengths, VOA Home staff works with families to develop a specific plan with short-term and long-term goals for ending homelessness and returning to self-sufficiency.
