VOA Today: Responding to Coronavirus
March 11, 2020
Hello everyone – I wanted to give you an update to VOA’s response to the coronavirus. Please know that we are following this situation closely and are taking several steps right away.
First, we want to make sure we educate our staff and clients about what we can all do to help prevent contracting and spreading any potential virus, including the coronavirus. The attached document is very informative and provides best practices for everyone to follow. Many of these are important, common-sense health and hygiene steps that we should practice at all times.
Second, we are providing all of our facilities with hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. The best way to be proactive is to thoroughly wash your hands often with soap and water. Health professionals recommend washing for at least 20 seconds -- or the time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice. We know that regularly washing your hands thoroughly may not always be possible -- though we encourage it -- so we will make hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes available to all. We urge you to use the wipes to keep your workspace clean and disinfected. We have also asked the Safety Ambassador at each facility to work with their manager to order these supplies. In addition, we will also distribute signs to remind everyone to wash their hands.
Third, the cleaning professionals who serve our facilities will be disinfecting doorknobs, light switches and handrails. With the exception of our facilities that serve adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities – where staff will be responsible -- we will also be asking clients living in our residential programs to clean and disinfect their living areas. We will provide the residents with the necessary cleaning products.
We will continue to monitor this situation and keep you updated. If you have any questions, please reach out to your supervisor or feel free to Terry Richards.
Please know that we will continue to monitor this challenging situation and keep you updated. Thanks so much for helping us achieve a safe and healthy workplace.
