VOA Today: The 11th annual Power of 1 Breakfast
Volunteers of America's Power of 1 Breakfast was on October 2. Over 1,000 of VOA's supporters gathered at the Kentucky International Convention Center to learn more about our mission and our more than 40 programs in 4 states. Representative Joni Jenkins and Senator Julie Raque Adams kicked off the event with introductions and Senate President Robert Stivers provided closing remarks. Our VOA Mid-States President and CEO Jennifer Hancock also gave an inspirational speech alongside Unity House graduate and doctoral candidate Shameka Sells-Moore and Shelby Men's Recovery graduate a VOA Board Member Rickey Green.
Rickey Green shared his journey of how he overcame addiction to become a successful small business owner, husband, father and VOA board member. Shameka Sells-Moore also shared how she and her children unexpectedly became homeless overnight. Fortunately, with the strong support of the staff at Unity House, Shameka had a safe place to live with her family while she worked toward stable housing. Today, she is finishing her PhD program in psychology, has her won counseling practice and works with women at VOA's Freedom House.
Thank you to all of our colleagues who worked so hard to make this event a success. Because of all of your efforts, this event raised funds and support that will greatly impact our organization. For everyone who was unable to attend the event, watch the video below for a glimpse into the stories that were told at the breakfast. This video was shared with all of our guests early in the event.
