Chance is six months old, and thanks to Freedom House he’s feeling all the love and care from his mother this Valentine’s Day.
His mother, Jacalyn, struggled with substance use disorder for years until Freedom House, a recovery program for pregnant and parenting women run by Volunteers of America Mid-States, stepped in to offer support and help her take back her life.
She brought Chance and her four-year-old son, Timmy, to Freedom House on October 9, 2025. Since then, VOA’s licensed clinical therapists have helped her understand the root cause of her addiction, and through parenting and life skills classes she has learned tools to create a stable, healthy life for herself and her children.
“Freedom House gave my children and me love when we needed it most and hope when I had lost it,” Jacalyn said. “They helped me discover my true potential – something I couldn’t see through my addiction. I am incredibly blessed to have been given the chance to heal here.”
Jacalyn graduated from the program last month. Today, she’s with her children and continues to focus on her recovery journey.
If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, VOA is here to help. Women can bring all children under the age of 18 with them to Freedom House. Visit https://www.voamid.org/locations/freedom-house/ to learn more or call 606-658-8050.
